Helium Leak Detector

Helium is not really the most dangerous of gases but then, it does pose a bit of a problem if taken into your system. However, the helium leak detector is widely used today as a tracer means of detecting leaks. It is a method used quite widely in the bio-tech industry, where manufacturers use the method to ensure that devices which are implanted such as the pacemaker are safe.

This is because the outer packages of the pacemaker could become compromised and leak battery fluids into the body system via body fluids. Helium leak detector tests help to forestall this occurrence. This test is also carried out in the automobile industry where the manufacturers use it to test the integrity of items like air conditioning units, airbag initiators and radiators.

When helium is being used as a means of tracing leakages in a system, the leaks therein can be categorized thus;

  1. Residual leak: This leak is a real one and could be small or serious.

  2. Virtual leak: This is not actually a leak but a kind of false alarm. When gases are trapped, the gas is released in small quantities, leading an operator to think there is a leakage.

This helium leak detector test method to find and forestall possible leakages has a number of advantages and they include the following;

  1. Speed: the duration within which a helium leak detector picks a leak signal is about one second.

  2. Dry: Unlike the older methods of detecting helium, the new helium leak detector presents a very dry test.

  3. Helium leak size: The size of the leak is detectable unlike in older methods.

  4. Reliability: The older methods usually leave someone to make a judgment as to whether there was a leak detected or not. The helium leak detector, however, reliably informs you that there is a helium leak immediately.

  5. High quality control: using this method has made it much easier for manufacturers to quickly detect and remove faulty gadgets thus maintaining high quality control.

  6. Cost-effectiveness: The cost of detecting leaks via the helium leak detectors is little compared to the older methods. When the slash in the labor costs also is included, this advantage is better appreciated.

  7. Easily operated: Compared to older methods, the helium detector method is much more easily operated.

A typical modern helium leak detector has the following features:

  1. Standby screen: This gives you information on the status on the filament and the amount of time that has elapsed since the device was last calibrated.

  2. Leak test screen: This gives you a visual indication of the trending information and helium leak rate on a real time basis.

  3. Setup Screen: This gives you the opportunity to manipulate the settings of the device. These settings may include the audio mode, alarm settings as well as helium leak detection units.

Accessories that are contained in a modern helium detector unit include the following:

  1. Optional Battery Operation: This allows you to switch to battery power if you do not have access to full power supply.

  2. Sniffing Probe: This is useful for pressurized applications.

  3. Carrying Case: This is used for convenience in the event that it has to be long distances.
