Carbon Monoxide Monitor

The need for a carbon monoxide monitor these days is as high as it’s ever been.  Did you know that an average of 170 people die every year from carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States? You might think these deaths are auto related but then that would be wrong.  They’re actually from non-automotive consumer parts. Carbon monoxide gas is odorless, poisonous, colorless, and lethal and is produced by the combustion taking place in machines such as cars, power generators, lawn mowers, snow mobiles amongst others.

The lethal nature of this gas is evidenced in its ability to cause death while going largely undetected, which is exactly where a carbon monoxide monitor fills the gap. There are, however, some symptoms which will be obvious at the initial stages of poisoning and these include the following;

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

When it reaches the advanced stages however, there are more serious symptoms such as mental confusion and vomiting coupled with loss of consciousness leading to possible death.

The next issue is whether or not CO poisoning can be prevented and the answer is simply yes. There are certain carbon monoxide poisoning detectors which are used to trace the existence of carbon monoxide in the immediate environment.

If you purchase a carbon monoxide monitor, you can just take the following steps to ensure that it functions well and for your best use.

  1. First, it is advisable that you buy a carbon monoxide gas detector that has a long battery life. These days, there are some of them that have battery lives extending as long as 6 years. You would do well to get one of those.

  2. It will be better if you go for a carbon monoxide detector alarm that has a display showing the Parts Per Millions (PPM) of the carbon monoxide. Although this doesn’t have much to do with the quality of the detector, it will allow you to track the buildup, if any, of the carbon monoxide.

  3. Make sure that any carbon monoxide monitors that you look at come with what is known as the ‘end-of-life’ alarm, which allows it to sound off if the product’s life is nearing an end.

  4. You should install your carbon monoxide poison detector on the floor or close to the ceiling as the gas in question has a density that is similar to that of air.

  5. You should avoid installing the device in areas that have a lot of grease or dust, as either of these can clog the sensors and inhibit the efficacy of the carbon monoxide detection device.

  6. You must also avoid installing the monitor  close to fluorescent bulbs as ‘electronic noise’ such as that given off by such bulbs could interfere with the device.

  7. There are some places you must not install the alarm and these include the bathrooms, kitchen, furnace room as well as kitchens.

  8. It is highly recommended that you install a carbon monoxide monitor in any room where someone sleeps with the door closed. This is to avoid a situation where the person behind the door does not hear the alarm go off.

  9. When you have installed the carbon monoxide gas detector in every room, test it to make sure that the alarm can be heard in every location around the house.
